Home Start Is Where The Heart Is

The Home Start charity covering Southport and Formby has highlighted the support of the Steve Morgan Foundation in keeping the organisation afloat and providing a vital service to the local community.

Home Start was established in 2001 to offer support to families with a child under five who are struggling to cope because of various difficulties affecting their family life.

Volunteers will regularly visit those families to offer friendship and reassurance, a listening ear, emotional support and practical help.

The Steve Morgan Foundation are now a year into a three-year grant of £60,000 to help with their core costs and salaries, and the funding came at a crucial time.

Annie Ives, manager of Home Start Southport and Formby, explains: “Steve Morgan Foundation funding has saved our organisation, and the support we’ve received has been instrumental in keeping our charity afloat.

“This has meant that we can continue our work to support struggling families who would otherwise have no one to turn to in hard times.

“A lot of our families are just about getting by and any small setback can cause a real crisis in family life.

“This means parents struggle to cope and children miss out.

“With help from the Steve Morgan Foundation these families know they can turn to Home-Start for help, advice, or a friendly, listening ear.

“Our families feel valued and know that someone cares about them.

“Receiving this funding has attracted other funders and now we can see the way forward for the next three years, which is a great situation to be in after the rollercoaster of previous years.”

As a result of the funding, 12 volunteers were recruited and trained who are now visiting families at home to offer friendship and reduce the loneliness of isolated parents.

In addition to the visits, Home Start offer a weekly Family Group giving much-needed respite to very isolated parents and a chance to make new friends.

Counselling is also offered and feedback from parents has indicated that the various initiatives make them feel more in control of their lives.

One of the parents helped by the charity has provided them with the following feedback: ‘Thank you, Home-Start, for all you’ve done for me. I know I’ve had my ups and downs (mainly downs) but without you and all the volunteers I wouldn’t be in the positive mindset I’m in now, and for that I’m truly grateful. Thank you so much.’
