Home Comforts For Michael

An Enable grant has helped a 22-year-old man with a diagnosis of Autism and Global Development Delay to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Michael’s condition means he can quickly become frustrated and damage items in his own house, including his own possessions.

He has often broken beds due to this destructive behaviour, and as a result had been sleeping on a mattress on the floor.

Michael had been finding the transition to adulthood challenging having left college, and his family have been looking for options for him to continue his studies.

“Michael’s family have spoken about his gentle and good-humoured nature despite his difficulties, and he has a very good relationship with his mother and sister,” says Lindsey De Bartolo, Enable Funding Officer with the Steve Morgan Foundation.

“His occupational therapist assessed his requirements and recommended that a sturdy bed would make such a difference to his health and wellbeing.

“The Tough Plus Single Bed stands up to Michael jumping on it and avoids the need for the family to continually be replacing his bed or for Michael to spend long periods of time sleeping on the floor.”

Michael’s Mum has highlighted the positive impact that the bed has brought.

“My son can now sleep in a very comfortable bed without the worry of it not lasting and him ending up on a mattress on the floor,” she said.

“He can now get a good sleep, and so can I, and I can’t thank the Steve Morgan Foundation enough.”

The Enable programme of funding can award a variety of grants of many different varieties and costs and the Bed for Michael cost just under £700.
