Read MoreA popular holiday club in the Wirral has been able to open its doors this summer after receiving help from the Steve Morgan Foundation.
The Hive Holiday Club has been a regular fixture in the calendar but faced an uncertain future because of Covid-19 and the rules on social distancing.
Nikki Anderson, head of marketing and communication at The Hive Youth Zone, said the £12,065 grant from the Steve Morgan Foundation has enabled them to fund a number of changes and safety measures.
She said: “Usually in the summer we run a holiday club for up 100 children a day. Because of the Covid restrictions we still wanted to run the club but in a much more restricted way.
“The £12,065 from Steve Morgan Foundation enabled us to recruit a session support co-ordinator who has been able to look at everything from staggered entry times, queuing safely, additional cleaning requirements and temperature checks.
“We provide some really high quality youth work and we didn’t want to have to close the holiday club down,” she said.
“The result is we’ve been able to open our holiday club to 25 children aged between eight and 12. The kids are in little pods of five but the costs have gone up for us.”
As a result of the rules on social distancing all the youngsters get their own activity packs rather than sharing.
Nikki said: “It used to cost £10 a day but we’ve had to put the cost up to £15, although it’s still heavily subsidised.
“The children start coming to us at 8.30am and some of them won’t leave until 6pm. Some working parents put their children in every day throughout the summer while for others it provides much-needed respite for parents who’ve had their children at home since March when the lockdown started.
“We would have really struggled to do this without the help of the Steve Morgan Foundation.”
Earlier this year the Steve Morgan Foundation awarded The Hive £25,000 to allow them to continue supporting young people through a programme of digital youth work and outreach.
Jane Harris, regional fundraising director at the Steve Morgan Foundation, said: “We’ve been a long-time supporter of The Hive Youth Zone and they’ve continued to support the community throughout the pandemic.”
