Funding’s Impact on Dallaglio RugbyWorks

A pioneering charity which helps teenagers at the New Horizon Academy in Warrington has reported a positive impact after its first term of funding from the Steve Morgan Foundation.

Dallaglio RugbyWorks, set up by former England rugby World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio, aims to help teenagers who are not in mainstream education to get into, and stay in, employment, training or education through a programme based on the values of rugby.

The charity received a three-year grant of £45,000 from the Steve Morgan Foundation with their programme in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) at New Horizons in Warrington (Click here for details)

New Horizons is an Alternative Provision (AP) Academy for children with social, emotional and mental health needs, who have been identified as being at risk of exclusion, harm or have already been excluded from mainstream education.

A cohort of six young males are enrolled, with the programme now into its second year having already participated in many experiences organised by Dallaglio RugbyWorks including a day at Bury FC, career taster sessions and visits from corporate supporters from the local area.

After the first term of Steve Morgan Foundation funding, New Horizons have reported improvement in all five behavioural characteristics of the students – autonomy, attitude, communication, core thinking skills and reliability.

The visit of the Foundation’s Director of Regional Grants Jane Harris was viewed as one of the highlights of the term, as well as a positive tournament run by RugbyWorks and general continuing support for the programme.

“Dallaglio RugbyWorks has been a fantastic addition to our curriculum and our pupils very much look forward to the sessions Rory and Tom [RugbyWorks coaches] deliver,” said teacher Gwyn Owen.

“It is a chance for our pupils to access a sport most of them have never played at their previous schools for one reason or another and some of the games included in the sessions are innovative.

“In addition, our pupils had the chance to participate against other schools in a rugby tournament, which allowed our pupils to develop their teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

“Finally, Dallaglio RugbyWorks has brought pupils together from different parts of the school who would never usually interact and with this alone has been deemed a major success at New Horizons.”

Plans for Term Two include focusing on the employability elements of the Dallaglio RugbyWorks programme, including a CV workshop and further career taster days through corporate partners BT, Bidfood and Laing O’Rourke.
