Enable Grant ‘Works’ For Philip

A 51-year-old man from Birkenhead has been able to continue to work after the Steve Morgan Foundation teamed up with the Access To Work programme to fund an all-terrain wheelchair.

Philip suffers from a variety of conditions including osteoarthritis, fibromyalagia, asthma and diabetes, as well as high blood pressure.

He also has generalised pain in his joints and muscles and suffers from muscle fatigue, which, when his neck is affected can lead to dizzy spells and the risk of falling.

When indoors and over short distances, Philip is able to stay mobile with the use of sticks, and also uses a powered wheelchair for getting around his home, indoors and out.

But in his job as a self-employed town planner working 16 hours a week, Philip needed an improved wheelchair to be able to effectively fulfil his duties.

“As part of his work Philip needs to undertake site inspections, which can be golf courses, beaches, forests and moorland, as well as in towns and cites,” says Karen Charles, Enable Funding Officer with the Steve Morgan Foundation.

“He is out in all weathers, travelling over all kinds of terrain.

“In order to continue to be able to work safely, and to minimise his risk of falling, Philip needed a powered all-terrain wheelchair .

“This includes features such as a seat tilt, to enable him to safely travel up and down slopes, an electric seat lift, to be able to raise his position to look over walls and hedges, and elevated leg rests, to reduce the pain he feels when sat for long periods in one position.

“Access to Work is a publicly-funded support programme which provides financial and practical support to people who have a disability or long-term health condition, to help them stay in work.

“They supplied approximately two thirds of the grant for Philip’s wheelchair, and the Steve Morgan Foundation provided an Enable grant to cover the rest of the cost and ensure Philip is able to continue with his chosen career as a town planner.”

The Enable grant comprised just over £5,000 of the total cost of the Extreme X8 all-terrain wheelchair.

Enable grants are available to provide a wide variety of specialised equipment for people of all ages –  for application details click here, or telephone (01829) 782808.
