Bakery rises to the challenge after life-saving grant

A social enterprise that relied on matchday revenue from Liverpool Football Club has been able to continue after receiving £13,920 from the Steve Morgan Foundation.

Homebaked is a bakery and café situated a stone’s throw away from the club’s Anfield stadium.

Half their income comes from the football club and matchday trade – both of which were wiped out because of Covid-19.

Both the bakery and café closed and treasurer Sally-Anne Watkiss said they faced having to furlough all their 20 staff until the Steve Morgan Foundation stepped in.

She said: “Our business is predicated on the profitable football subsiding the non-football days. We supply Liverpool with 700 of our award-winning pies for each game, which brings in about £1,300, plus there’s about £4,500 on match-day sales from the bakery. By comparison we take in about £700 in the cafe on a normal day.

“Because of the money we make through the football we’re able to bake fresh bread every day and sell it for £1.60, which is comparable with supermarket prices.”

Ms Watkiss said the day after their application was approved by the Foundation, the money was in their account.

“Without the money we would probably have had to furlough all 20 of our staff,” she said. “This enabled us to keep five of our staff on and sell some of our frozen pies by delivery.

“We were also able to send fresh bread every day to local food banks that then send the loaves out as parcels. A local Asda has also ordered pies off us to feed their staff.

“We’ve had to pivot out business and we’ve only been able to do because of the speed that the Steve Morgan Foundation stepped in.

“We’re a social enterprise rooted in the community and we know what the community needs. We’re nimble because we know what goods and services people here need.

“Homebaked will come out of this stronger, we’ve shown our value by being able to do things like send fresh bread out with food bank parcels and helping the most vulnerable people to eat affordable, healthy food.”

Steve Morgan, of the Steve Morgan Foundation, said: “Homebaked performs a vital role in the community in and around Anfield and I’m delighted that we were able to move weekly when they needed help.”
