Read MoreA young girl from Kinmel Bay in Conwy is benefitting from a new, specialised trike thanks to the Enable programme of funding from the Steve Morgan Foundation.
Amelia, aged seven, suffers from Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, and paralysis of both lower limbs.
She can self-propel her wheelchair over short distances indoors but needs to be transferred by an adult into a chair and, while she can sit unsupported for short periods, her posture is poor because of her scoliosis.
“The specialised Tomcat trike provides a beneficial form of exercise for Amelia, strengthening her arm and trunk muscles,” says Karen Charles, Enable Funding Officer with the Steve Morgan Foundation.
“It gives her an alternative form of mobility when going out with her parents and enables her to participate in a fun and sociable activity, whilst also improving her posture, strength and independence.
“The trike is operated by turning a hand pedal and, during her assessment session, Amelia was able to do this and control the direction that she was heading in,” added Karen.
“She was overjoyed to be able to do this on her own, without needing Mum to push her.”
The Foundation has made a grant of £3,385 towards the trike, which has now been officially handed over, to a delighted Amelia!
“Amelia was delighted when we arrived with the trike, and kept saying ‘wow’, over and over again,” adds Karen.
“We are sure it will make a really positive difference to her life in increasing her independence and improving her mobility, as well as an added activity that she can enjoy with her family.”
Amelia’s mother Sylwia was equally delighted to see her daughter able to enjoy that independence.
“You have no idea how much this has meant to Amelia and my family!” she said.
“The joy of seeing the smile on Amelia’s face when she rides the trike just like a normal, healthy child is just wonderful.
“Not only that, it will have a huge impact on strengthening the muscles in her trunk and back to help her to sit straighter.
“We are so grateful and thankful to the Steve Morgan Foundation.”
The Foundation supplies Enable funding to people of all ages who are in need of specialised equipment. More details are available at stevemorganfoundation.org.uk or by calling (01829) 782808.
